5 dresses every woman should own: it’s a wrap

diane-von-furstenberg-the-wrap-dress-1974-feel-like-a-woman-wear-a-dress

Oh, it’s been so long since I posted my last “5 dresses” post! I really didn’t meant to take such a long pause, but it turned out that the timing actually worked better than I would have ever imagined.

The dress I wanted to talk about as a part of the series was, of course, the wrap dress that. Dreamed up and created by Diane von Furstenberg 40 years ago, the wrap has already been featured on the blog back in 2011 when I wrote my DvF stories an talked about Camilla Morton’s book, The Tale of the Empress’s New Clothes in 2013, so instead of producing a several paragraphs long monologue all over again, I would like to invite you to follow the links and discover the history of this iconic piece.

Where to buy: 1. Printed silk jersey wrap dress, DvF (£330), 2. Amelia python printed silk jersey wrap dress, DvF (£385), 4. Blue silk printed wrap dress, DvF (£264), 5. New Julian Two silk-jersey wrap dress, DvF (£330), 6. White & black silk New Julian Two wrap dress, DvF (£330).

I truly believe that every woman should have a wrap dress in her wardrobe and, ideally, it must be a DvF dress because the real thing is so much better than any wrap-inspired substitutions! You feel it in the fabric, the unique prints or the finishing touches of the plain versions, the way it’s cut and follows the lines of the body moulding itself to your DNA, giving you the comfort, making you feel beautiful and free.

Where to buy: 7. Kira silk jersey wrap dress, DvF (£194), 8. New Jeanne animal print silk jersey wrap dress, DvF (£184), 9. New Jeanne Two crepe jersey wrap dress, DvF (£281), 12. Julian Two zebra print jersey wrap dress, DvF (£220).

It takes time to find the most perfect version of the wrap among all the available options, but as soon as you “meet” the one, it remains in your wardrobe forever.

A few days ago, as I watched the live stream from the opening of “The journey of a dress” exhibition celebrating its 40th anniversary, I realised, yet again, how timeless and precious a simple dress can be and what an incredibly impact it had on the way we perceive fashion, style and lets be honest, ourselves, whenever we get a chance to wear the wrap.

It’s this time of the year again to let your fingers touch the keyboard, get on-line and find your dream bag. Monnier Frères, one of my favourite shopping destination, is hosting another tempting sale offering up to 50% off some of the most desirable and fabulous handbags you could think of (including brands that aren’t available anywhere else). So why not treat yourself? I know it’s not Christmas or birthday (though there is always a birthday girl out there), but dreams don’t necessarily need a calendar to come true.

Maryna Linchuk in Harper’s Bazaar 2010 & Company’s Style Blogger Awards 2013

harpers-bazaar-usa-march-2010-maryna-linchuk-6

This is officially the longest title ever used on this blog, but in case you missed my Saturday post and in danger of sounding like a broken record to those who do read my blog daily (massive apologies for these extra paragraphs), the story involving Fashioned by Love and Company Style Blogger Awards 2013 was destined to continue…

I got through to the second stage as one of the nominees in the Best Fashion Blog category.

Now I need as many votes as possible to win the thing.

If you love me (or my blog), please follow the link and keep on clicking on the “Next page” button until you get to the 5th category, Best Fashion Blog, where you will see infashionswetrust.blogspot.com (still feels surreal, to be honest).

Tick the box next to it and then continue clicking the “Next page” button until you get to the last page (page 11, as far as I remember) where you will be asked to enter your name and e-mail address and click “Submit”.

Then you can relax and receive a huge imaginary hug I’ve just sent you (and trust me, I would hug every single one of you if I could).

And now, the Monday Morocco-inspired editorial from the March issue of the US Harper’s Bazaar 2010 featuring gorgeous Maryna Linchuk. I know the story is only about 3 years ago, but I chose it over everything else because I loved the styling so much! For me, this is a great example of casual comfortable elegance that certainly fits the “dress for the century” rule (plus Spring/Summer 2010 was one of my favourite fashion seasons).

Spring 2013 bags: pattern on pattern trend

carven-rtw-ss2013-details-45_083256281143

There’s a new trend in town. The bags that match the clothes were seeing in many Spring 2013 ready-to-wear collections,  from subtle colour coordinated ensembles at Elie Saab, Giambattista Valli and Chado Ralph Rucci, to full on pattern-on-pattern doubles at Louis Vuitton, Guy Laroche, Carven and Gucci. No longer it’s about shoes and bags, gloves and bags, belts and bag or any particular colour… Now your arm candy requires an identical twin of a dress or vice versa.

Although I can easily picture wearing the monochromatic mixes, I feel that it would take a very stylish girl to pull off the pattern-on-pattern combos. What do you think?

Diane von Furstenberg and the Tale of the Empress’s New Clothes

diane-von-furstenberg-the-empress-new-clothes-camilla-morton-cover

“We all do the same things. What makes us different is how we do them.”

Diane von Furstenberg | Camilla Morton, The Empress's New Clothes

A month or so ago as the seasons changed, a new book landed on my bedside table. The third fashion fairy tale by Camilla Morton called The Empress’s New Clothes was about Diane von Furstenberg. After reading The Tale of Sleeping Beauty and The Elves and the Shoemaker I was really looking forward to Camilla’s new story, excited about new discoveries and seeing Diane’s illustrations and couldn’t wait to cocoon myself in beautiful words.

diane-von-furstenberg-the-empress-new-clothes-camilla-morton-2

Having read Diane’s autobiography and writing about her in the past I wished and hoped that the fairy tale, a creative blend of Diane von Furstenberg’s memories and an imaginary story of a young empress based on the classic Andersen’s “Emperors Old Clothes”, would be good enough to portrait this wonderful iconic woman and have an impact even on those people who don’t know much about the designer.

The book didn’t disappoint. It was an enjoyable and enchanting story full of love and beauty.

Read it on a quiet afternoon when the light outside becomes soft and sleepy and the shadows wrap the world in a blanket made of fantasies and stars. Immerse in this fairy tale and allow yourself to dream savouring each sentence and, maybe, a cup of ginger tea, one of Diane’s favourite.
