It’s a cold morning, the true unadorned autumn morning that comes with a mist of rain, cotton wool fogs and clouds so thick that you can’t see the sky. My initial response is to crawl back to bed, hide under my huge, oh-so-inviting, fluffy and warm duvet, hug Oscar and hibernate. I suppose I could turn on the heating, but in a way it means giving into the new season completely, embracing it with a positive attitude and generous supplies of steaming cups of matcha. And candles… Fragrant, comforting, mesmerising candles… Perhaps, this is where I am going to start. The candles and a story from the April 2006 issue of Italian Vogue.

Sleepy and chilly Monday morning, smell of coffee, hearty drops of hot water in a shower blending with soapy bubbles, memories of the weekend dissolving into the past, bursting inbox and long to-do list.

Before diving into reality, I am going to take a quiet moment enjoying these images of Natalia photographed by Paolo Roversi for The Seated Beauty editorial published in the May 2010 issue of Vogue China.

And then… I’ll wake up.

Natalia Vodianova as Sea Tsarevna in Vogue Russia 2008

I guess, I could translate “tsarevna” as “princess” because technically it’s the same thing, but since tsarevna is the title for a Russian princess I decided to keep everything more authentic.

I don’t know the story behind this editorial, but some of the styling elements reminded me of a fairy-tale by Alexander Pushkin. One of the characters was a sea tsarevna that would appear as a swan (nothing to do with the Swan lake, by the way). The story then inspired an opera written by Rimsky-Korsakov. The costumes and decorations for the opera were designed by a Russian artist, Mikhail Vrubel and it is one of his paintings that somehow linked my childhood memories of the image to these photos from the March issue of Russian Vogue 2008.
